In Aikido, Shomenuchi attacking is commonly
known as a downward knife hand strike to the top of the head. Shomenuchi is not limited to
empty hand. In more serious practice, it is also practiced with a knife or other blunt
instrument targetting the head.
It is mandatory that both partners know how to
execute a an overhead strike to the head effectively during practice. As in all attacks,
the attack is done with stealth, force with intent to harm.
Practicing proper attacking techniques will add
to a more effective practice and better Aikido techniques.
